Heute ist er gestorben, Jimmy Cliff, einer der populärsten Ska- und Reggaemusiker. Ohne ihn hätte sich wahrscheinlich Reggae nicht weltweit durchgesetzt, trotz Bob Marley. Er lebt in seinen Liedern weiter.

"Weltweite Bekanntheit erlangte Jimmy Cliff Anfang der 1970er Jahre mit dem Film "The Harder They Come", in dem er nicht nur die Hauptrolle spielte, sondern auch den Soundtrack prägte. Stücke wie "Many Rivers to Cross", "You Can Get It If You Really Want" und "Vietnam" entwickelten sich zu Hymnen, die weit über Jamaika hinaus hallten. Cliffs Musik verband Hoffnung, Widerstand und Menschlichkeit - Qualitäten, die ihn zu einem globalen Botschafter der jamaikanischen Kultur machten. Dafür wurde er auch mit dem jamaikanischen "Order of Merit" ausgezeichnet, der höchsten kulturellen Ehrung seines Landes.

Bis ins hohe Alter blieb Jimmy Cliff musikalisch aktiv und kreativ. Er veröffentlichte Alben, arbeitete mit internationalen Künstlern zusammen und brachte seine Botschaft von Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Durchhaltewillen einem weltweiten Publikum nahe. Am 24. November 2025 ist Jimmy Cliff im Alter von 81 Jahren an einer Lungenentzündung verstorben." (zit. Oe1 Spielräume)
